JUST CRUSHING

A political demolition derby made by Iowa teens with artists Nancy Nowacek and Allison Rowe

Just Crushing
teaches Iowa teens how to develop political arguments and engage in healthy dialogue—all through the fun and creativity of designing cars for demolition derby. They’ll use their skills of civic engagement to collaboratively design demolition cars about political issues that matter to them and then watch their cars—driven by professional drivers—compete in a special politically-themed demolition derby for Iowans from all walks of life.

Why do students need this now?
Across the Midwest, suburban and rural students need outlets to develop creative skills, critical thinking, trade skills, and professional opportunities across political, cultural, and economic divides. Just Crushing does just that.

Why does Iowa need this now?
Isolation and fear threatens the fabric of our communities. Suburban and rural communities in particular need the space and time to (re)learn how to work together—especially when they don’t see eye to eye. By capturing the magic of Just Crushing, we create a template for more communities to build and run derbys of their own.

With your support, we can make a direct positive impact on students’ lies while reconnecting communities—one crash at a time

Teens prototyped their design ideas at full scale on paper car panels.

Teens made notes and sketches throuough the week.

Realizing the final design required collaboration by the whole team.
